What Did Solexa DNA Sequencing Get Started?
A company called Solexa DNA sequencing seems to have put genetic fingerprinting on the map for public use. Since Solexa DNA sequencing released the news about their genetic sequencer that puts out 1TB of raw sequencing data in a day, other companies were sure to follow. But some of these other companies aren’t doing it in the name of research; they are mirroring the Solexa DNA sequencing for profit.
The purpose for the Solexa DNA sequencing super sequencer is for isolation of mutated genes in order to assist in medical and genetic research. The Solexa DNA sequencing technology is so fast that the turnaround for delivery of the data is faster than the data is able to be stored. At the time the sequencer was announced, there wasn’t a library large enough to store that amount of sequencing data.
Solexa DNA sequencing, along with television shows that glamorize forensic science and paternity testing, has spurned a frenzy of DNA testing for the general public. There are companies who are now charging under $1,000 for personal DNA testing. Solexa DNA sequencing is not one of these companies, by the way. But the ones who are offering this service, or disservice as you will, could potentially cause some real damage to people’s lives.
Not everybody is an honest person. They might say that they want a DNA test in order to research their ancestry, but is that really the reason? Or are they trying to be amateur crime solvers. And if that’s the case, what’s next? Police issue 45’s and fake badges?
Or are they trying to find out the paternity of their baby? Isn’t it bad enough that we have to watch the “who’s your daddy” talk shows on every other television network day and night? Apparently not. These television shows have made it popular for young girls to admit that there might be 13 different fathers for their two year old. Did Solexa DNA sequencing start this? No, at least not intentionally.
The structures for these DNA sequencing companies that send out cups to spit in and charge $1,000 for the results are such that it makes it easy for anyone to invade the privacy of others. This was most certainly not the intent of Solexa DNA sequencing. Solexa DNA sequencing designed a breakthrough product that is used for the good of the scientific community. Bravo to Solexa DNA sequencing for that.
